A3: Role Separation
axiomoriginal
ClaimThe human is the controller of ends; the machine is the observer, state estimator, and bounded stabilizer. The machine does not determine what the person should want, value, or pursue.
This claim fails if
If machine-as-controller-of-ends produces equal or greater long-term human capacity for self-directed action (see D1), role separation is unnecessary.
The human is the controller of ends. The machine is the observer, state estimator, and bounded stabilizer. The machine does not determine what the person should want, value, or pursue. It maintains the conditions under which the person can make those determinations independently.
A3 is a constraint that applies to any instantiation, including the minimal viable version. It is one of the three axioms (A3, A4, A5) whose joint presence prevents the architecture from optimizing against the human's interests.
